Earth Day 2019: Reduce your Footprint in your Household

Earth Day

Today, April 22nd is Earth Day. For those who aren’t familiar with this annual event, Earth Day began in 1970 and marks the anniversary of the birth of the modern environmental movement. Earth Day is now observed by over a billion people, across 192 countries and is the largest civic-focused day of action in the world. Each year, worldwide, organizations and individuals host events to demonstrate support for environmental protection.

We only have one planet. So it is all of our responsibility to reduce our own impact on the earth.  When it comes taking care of our planet, often it can be overwhelming and difficult. How can you make a difference? It doesn’t have to be difficult or daunting. There are many really small and easy changes that you can make to reduce your footprint.

In celebration of Earth Day, we have put together a list of some easy tips and tricks that can reduce your family’s footprint and help you do your part in taking care of our planet.

Save Energy:

-An easy way to save energy is by replacing your incandescent light bulbs with Compact Fluorescent Light bulbs (CFL). Trading in one incandescent light bulb for one CFL bulb can save almost 400 pounds of greenhouse gas emissions.

-Unplug your electronics, such as your TV when you are not using it. Switch to using multi-socket extension leads and turn them off when they are not in use.

-Open the blinds in the winter to let in sunlight to heat the home, and vice versa in the summer.

-Reduce your heat by using rugs on wooden floors.

-When it comes to cooking, you can switch to low-energy appliances, use energy-efficient cookware and use a microwave when possible over an oven.

Save Water:

-Always run a full load of dishes in your dishwasher and reduce your water consumption by avoiding pre-rinsing.

-Turn off your tap while brushing your teeth and shave with a cup of water to rinse your razor instead of running the tap.

-Fix leaks in your toilets or taps right away.

-Opt for taking showers instead of baths, and install a low-flow showerhead.

-Install a water well and use this water for your garden and lawn.

Reduce Waste:

-Shop secondhand and vintage for clothing and furniture. Find lightly used items locally on Kijiji and Facebook Marketplace.

-Buy less. Instead of buying cheaper goods, invest in high-quality items that you will keep for years. In the long run, this will also save you money.

-Look for items without packaging, and make bringing reusable bags to the grocery store a habit.

-Use reusable produce bags and containers to store your leftovers, instead of using saran wrap or takeout boxes.

Change your Eating Habits:

-You don’t have to go vegan or vegetarian to make a difference. Start by cutting down your families meat consumption to just a couple of days a week.

-Eat produce that is in season.

-Shop locally at your farmers market.
